Hollywood: Ten young actors who’ll become famous

The busy American summer movie season is setting the stage for the probable stars of the future. Here are the 10 people -- 5 men and 5 women, from the hot blonde of “Grey’s Anatomy” to the god of the “Transformers” -- who are the emerging Hollywood gods at the top of the current wave to stardom.

TAKE A GOOD LOOK at these 10 Hollywood actors. And if you haven’t seen them (or heard of them) before, put them into your head, because these five young men and five young women that we’re showcasing are the emerging stars of this year’s American summer movie season. Some already known, others whose stars are rapidly rising, these are truly showbiz’s future stars and starlets. So they are also destined to gain honor and celebrity in Europe as well, as can be seen by the continued success of imported films coming from the USA.

In this group of the "Magnificent 10" which we have chosen here are two who already well known in Europe. Among the women is Katherine Heigl, a well known face on Italian tv who has now become a new, stunning queen of comedy on the big screen. Among the men, Shia La Beuf, the hero of the blockbuster “Transformers,” is in great demand by directors and producers alike.

But we’ll take them in order, alphabetically, one by one, as we present our list of “Those destined to be Gods, ver. 2007:”

Adam Brody
The young women of Italy will remember this 20-something actor as one of the stars of series O.C. But Adam is no longer simply a star of the small screen. In recent years, he’s played in a series of movies on the big screen from “Mr & Mrs Smith,” along side the couple, Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie, to the romantic drama “In the Land of Women.” He also played in the movie “Smiley Face” (directed by Gregg Araki) featured at the Sundance Festival. In sum, he’s a young actor who doesn’t want to be just loved by teenagers.

Charlie Cox
A 25 year-old, pureblooded Londoner, Charlie is the star of the just released movie of the moment in the United States, “Stardust,” a fantasy movie with a cast of actors of the caliber of Ian McKellen, Peter O’Toole and Sienna Miller. This would have been enough to launch Cox to the top of the movie world. However he’s already working on another picture, called “Stone of Destiny,” which will be released in 2008.

Zach Efron
25 years-old in October, this young actor has made himself known at the Locarno Film Festival with his role in the cult-musical “Hairspray,” alongside John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer. But his true fame comes from another song-and-dance project called “High School Musical,” carrying the Disney Channel label (which is also available here in Italy) that has captured the hearts of millions upon millions of young people. In fact, following this brief entry into the higher brow world of cinema, Zach is scheduled to return to work on “High School 2 and 3. So expect him to remain on top.

Bill Hader
29 years-old, dark haired, with a classic comedic face, this actor from across the sea is best known for his forty or so episodes on the television show “Saturday Night Live.” However, 2007 marked his passage to the big screen with two comedies; the first, “Superbad,” comes out this Friday in the United States; the second “Red Hot,” was released some 10 days ago. During the next few months, his card is full: He’s been shooting or is scheduled to start shooting in four other upcoming movies. Good luck sir

Katherine Heigl
Stunning, tall, blond, a classic star spangled beauty, prior to entering into movies, Katherine had become a tv star in the doctor’s garb as Izzy Stevens in the cult series “Grey’s Anatomy,” which has had good success in Italy as well (Italia-1 will broadcast its third season this fall). In the television series, her adventures are perhaps somewhat overshadowed by the other two female characters played by Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh. In the movie theaters, however, the 29 year-old Heigl has set the bar for them all, with the comedy “Knocked Up” (“Molto Incinta” in Italian, meaning “Very (and surprisingly) Pregnant” actually a great connotative translation of the American title ) which broke American box office records. And she’s working on another great film, “27 dresses,” scheduled to be released in 2008.

Shia La Beuf
The true emerging god of this Hollywood summer season, one who has already been featured, both at home and abroad, in many articles and on many magazine covers. This has been largely thanks to his role in the techno-fantasy film “Transformers” (based on the toys bearing the same name); but also for his mesmerizing performance in the thriller “Disturbia.” If that’s not enough, this 21 year-old, who reminds us a bit of Edward Norton in his youth, is on the set of Indiana Jones 4 alongside such greats as Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. Hmmm, does that not seem interesting ...

Rhona Mitra
Whoever has followed -- on pay-tv, or (late at night) on Rete4 -- the television series “Boston Legal,” knows Rhona’s face (and curves) quite well. While staying on the small screen, she appeared also on a number of episodes of “Nip and Tuck.” Now, however, the 31 year-old British-born actress finds herself perfectly situatated to make a splash in the movie world: the horror-thriller “Skinwalkers” is about to be released in the USA where she plays a lead role; and she has been among the lead actors in two other films released in 2007, “Number 23 and “Shooter.” Before year’s end and the start of 2008, she’ll return to American movie-houses once more with a fantasy-action film named “Doomsday.”

Emma Roberts
Her future can be found in that name: the 17 year-old Emma is the niece of Julia Roberts (she’s the daughter of the brother of the diva, Eric, who’s also an actor). But belonging to a famous family also can be a curse: the comparisons between her and the ex-Pretty Woman are not worthwhile and not always kind to the younger Roberts. However, the little diva is making her own way. This year in theaters, she took on the role of the young heroine Nancy Drew in a movie by the same name; she continues to work a lot on tv, and is presently filming another movie, “Wild Child” for the big screen where she plays a Malibu princess who’s sent by her father to strict school in England.

Emma Stone
Class of 1988, born in Scottsdale, Arizona, she is among the cast of the semi-forgetable comedy “Superbad.” However, Emma made a name for herself above all in her role in the television series “Drive,” a drama about a group of various characters, all involved in illegal automobile racing. Her schedule for 2008 also promises to be busy. She’s slated for two comedies, one of which is to be directed by Peter Cattaneo of the “Full Monty.”

Scout Taylor-Compton
Even if her name sounds oh so British, this 18 year-old blond actually hails from California. After having done the gamut, playing in a series of single episodes in numerous television series (among which is “Cold Case,” which the Italian public knows well, and “Close to Home,” currently playing on RaiDue), she’s planing to take-on the big screen with a new, long awaited version of “Halloween,” to be directed by Rob Zombie. In the meantime, she has been signed up for two other films. Finally, even the website Imdb has listed her as a “star of the future.” Congratulations!

L'intensa estate cinematografica americana lancia le probabili star del prossimi futuro. Ecco i dieci personaggi - 5 uomini, 5 donne, alla bionda sexy di Grey's Anatomy al divo di Transformers - chi sono i divi emergenti di Hollywood sulla prossima cresta dell'onda.

GUARDATELI bene, questi dieci volti hollywoodiani. E se non li avete mai visti prima, imprimeteveli nella mente: perché i cinque giovanotti e le cinque signorine di cui pubblichiamo le foto sono i grandi emergenti, nell'estate cinematografica americana. Alcuni già noti, altri in rapida ascesa, sono le vere promesse dello showbiz a stelle e strisce. E dunque destinati a conquistare onori e celebrità anche in Europa, vista la continua importazione di prodotti made in Usa.

In questo gruppo di Magnifici 10 che abbiamo selezionato, sono due i personaggi più noti, anche qui in Europa. Tra le donne, Katherine Heigl: volto tv conosciuto pure in Italia, e ora nuova reginetta delle commedie da grande schermo. E tra gli uomini Shia La Beuf, eroe del blockbuster Transformers, richiestissimo da registi e produttori.

Ma andiamo con ordine, e vediamo, uno per uno, i saranno divi 2007. In rigoroso ordine alfabetico.

Adam Brody
Le ragazze italiane ricordano il ventottenne attore come co-protagonista del serial O.C. Ma Adam non è più un semplice divo formato piccolo schermo. Visto che, nel frattempo, ha partecipato a una serie di opere da grande schermo: da Mr & Mrs Smith, accanto alla coppia di star Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie, al dramma romantico In the land of women. Ha anche partecipato al Sundance Festival con Smiley Face, regia di Gregg Araki. Insomma, un ragazzo che non vuole piacere solo ai teenager.

Charlie Cox
Venticinque anni, londinese purosangue, Charlie è protagonista del film appena uscito di cui, in questi giorni, negli States si parla di più: si chiama Stardust, è un'avventura fantastica, e ha nel cast nomi del calibro di Ian McKellen, Peter 'O Toole e Sienna Miller. E tanto è bastato per lanciare Cox nel firmamento cinematografico. Ora l'attore sta girando un'altra pellicola, Stone of destiny, che uscirà nel 2008.

Questo 2007, però, segna il suo passaggio su grande schermo, in due commedie. Una, Superbad, esce venerdì prossimo nei cinema americani; l'altra, Hot Rod, c'è arrivata una decina di giorni fa. E per i prossimi mesi, il suo carnet è pieno: sono altre quattro le pellicole a cui ha partecipato o sta per partecipare. Buona fortuna...

Katherine Heigl
Bella, alta, bionda, classico aspetta da reginetta di bellezza a stelle e strisce, Katherine, prima di sfondare al cinema, è diventata una star tv nei panni della dottoressa Izzy Stevens nel cult serial Grey's Anatomy, che anche in Italia ha avuto un buon successo (Italia 1 trasmetterà la terza stagione in autunno). Nel telefilm, le sue avventure sono forse leggermente in ombra, rispetto a quelle delle altre due interpreti femminili Ellen Pompeo e Sandra Oh. Ma al cinema, la ventinovenne Heigl ha dato una pista a tutte: la commedia di cui è protagonista, Knocked up (Molto incinta, nel titolo italiano), ha sfondato i botteghini americani. E si prepara a fare il bis con un altro film brillante, 27 dresses, in uscita nel 2008.

Shia La Beuf
Il vero divo emergente dell'estate hollywoodiana, che ha già conquistato, in patria e all'estero, tanti articoli e copertine di giornali. Grazie alla partecipazione al giocattolone fantascientifico-tecnologico Transformers, soprattutto; ma anche all'intensa interpretazione nel thriller Disturbia. E adesso, come se non bastasse, questo ventunenne che ricorda un po' Edward Norton da giovane è anche sul set di Indiana Jones 4, accanto ai mostri sacri Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg e George Lucas. Se vi sembra poco...

Rhona Mitra
Chi ha seguito - sui canali a pagamento, o (in tardissima serata) su Rete4 - la serie tv Boston Legal, conosce bene il volto e le curve di Rhona. La quale, restando in ambito piccolo schermo, ha partecipato anche ad alcuni episodi di Nip/Tuck. Ma adesso la trentunenne attrice, nata in Gran Bretagna, sta vivendo un ottimo momento cinematografico: è appena uscito negli Usa l'horror thriller Skinwalkers, di cui è protagonista; ed è stata tra le interpreti anche di altri due film usciti nel 2007, Number 23 e Shooter. E, tra fine anno e inizio 2008, tornerà nelle sale americane con un film un po' azione un po' fantastico, Doomsday.

Emma Roberts
Il suo destino è in quel cognome: la diciassettenne Emma è la nipote di Julia Roberts (figlia del fratello della diva, Eric, anche lui attore). Ma per lei l'appartenenza a cotanta famiglia è anche una maledizione: i paragoni tra lei e l'ex Pretty Woman si sprecano, e non sempre a favore della più giovane. La mini-apirante diva, comunque, tira dritta per la sua strada: quest'anno, al cinema, ha indossato i panni dell'eroina delle ragazzine Nancy Drew, nell'omonimo film; continua a lavorare tanto alla tv; e intanto sta girando un'altra pellicola da grande schermo, Wild Child. In cui interpreta una principessa di Malibu spedita dal padre in una severa scuola inglese.
